San Diego’s Phrenik has been a staple of the Southern California drum and bass scene for the last half decade, but has given time to a multitude of genres on his widely heard DrumnBassTV.com radio show “The Resistance” and his ‘System Check’ mix series. Currently focusing on drum and bass as well as dubstep, the producer showcases skills on both fronts for his debut release with Simplify.

On the A-side, Phrenik stays true to his roots, albeit in a different style and tone, with Another Dimension. This electro-step jammer combines trancy synth fanfare and a driving bassline, giving the tune an aggressively urgent, yet upbeat, feel. Fans of the Brookes Brothers and Ram Trilogy take note. At the break, Dimension takes its name, as Phrenik flips the scrip to a dark, menacing dubstep cadence and then winding back up for the big finish.

Showing that same menacing dub flavor only alluded to on the A, Phrenik goes hard on Androids. A grinding, filthy stepper, ‘droids blends squelched out synths and gurgling bass in a dark dub tour de force sure to be a crowd pleaser on the tear-out dubstep scene.
