Running Time: 62:19

In today’s club land, most DJs get by simply stringing the ends of two records together. Granted, it takes a certain kind of talent to program the night, moving the crowd along with highs and lows of the music. And people recognize the hustle involved with tracking down rare gems, deep bangers, and unreleased dubs so a DJ may act as a tastemaker—a sort of dance floor educator pontificating on what’s going to be hot tomorrow. And for most guys, that kind of talent and hustle would be enough.

But what about skill?

What about that technical flare, the road-tested, two-handed turntable trickery honed over countless hours in someone’s basement?

What ever happened to looking up and knowing that the DJ was the most talented guy in the room?

For Charles White, better known as DJ Selrahc (pr: sel rok), simply digging for records and stringing them together was never enough. Growing up, White was mesmerized by videos of DJ’s who exhibited skill every time they touched a record—Jazzy Jeff, DJ Craze, Grand Master Roc Raida—and so he took that approach to the hip hop and drum & bass records he collected over the years. Drawing on the influence of the other DJs in his family (his father and aunt both twisted the plates in the 70’s) and the musically diverse landscape of the late 80’s and 90’s (everything from Public Enemy to Skinny Puppy), Selrahc set about becoming the show stopping turntable wizard he’s known as today.

While stationed in Okinawa, Selrahc hooked up with the Okizoo Crew, a collective of US nationals intent on bringing some American flavor to the Japanese drum & bass scene, culminating in an appearance with Makoto & Deeizm in 2006. A couple years and a couple of moves later, Selrahc landed in Seattle, where he recently shocked the talent-rich local drum & bass scene by stealing a top spot in the Annual 1Love Drum & Bass Battles with a vicious all vinyl, 3-turntable battle routine. When he’s not blowing minds, Selrahc’s working on various production projects and mix tapes. With such talent, hustle, and skill, it won’t be long till the secret’s out on Selrahc and he’s turning out dance floors nationwide.

Bopper Shuffle

Recently, NYC DJ/Producer J. Rabbit’s been kicking down doors and taking names with his aggressive style and dance floor savvy on a slew of DnB and dubstep remixes and originals. On his latest release, Rabbit takes a trip to the movies, drawing on two counter-culture classics to provide the backdrop for two ripping drum and bass workouts.

In an homage to the late Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the 1998 Johnny Depp picture based on his work, and to excess in general—Somewhere Around Barstow is a high-energy, drug-fueled rollercoaster ride across the desert in one of Rabbit’s most unique productions yet. After Thompson (Depp) catalogues he and Dr. Gonzo’s assortment of “uppers, downers, screamers, and laughers”, Rabbit rips a fat bass line and is off, blazing across the dance floor with a tough jump-up DnB stepper. Soon enough, though, the drugs wear off—or others are ingested (we’re not sure which)—and Somewhere grinds down to menacing, choppy dubstep cadence. Rabbit calls the re-up man at the break, and is off to the races again. But soon enough, the high wears off and the grime returns, leaving the dance floor spent and confused, but ultimately happy.

On the flip, Rabbit ups the ante with Bopper Shuffle. Here we trade the relative desolation of the Nevada desert for the mean streets of The Bronx, where the omnipresent “D.J.”, from the 80’s cult classic The Warriors, starts the dance in this crunchy, aggressive DnB banger. Metallic synths box with a gritty bass line as dancers battle their way across enemy turf to the relative safety of Coney Island. Just like in the movie, the trip is not without its cuts and bruises. However, with Rabbit’s aggressive style and Ajax’s fists in tow, Bopper Shuffle will leave anybody who tries to get in its way very, very sorry.

Forever

American Werewolf is Cameron Willett and Kevin Chessie, a live electro act based in Seattle, WA who are known for whipping groups of the city’s hip set into a sweaty frenzy with their big-room indie electro productions. Originally recording as Phantom Power, the duo’s released 2 prior EPs to strong critical acclaim and underground hype. On their Touch Me EP, this American Werewolf lands in Paris, drawing influences from the region’s house and electronic forefathers in a four-set of indie bangers.

The EP’s title track is a thumper with a swing-stepping style that boils and builds to a full on tech-assault reminiscent of some of the harder works of Daft Punk or Etienne De Crecy. Post-breakdown, Touch Me, shifts into overdrive, crunching its way to crescendo and locking firmly into high gear, peak hour power.

French By Numbers, Werewolf’s stab at the French House sound and the most commercial-sounding on the EP, takes light synth elements and a female vocal sample and builds them into a clubby electro track that would be at home on dance floors from Miami to Moscow.

Tech-funk is the name of the game on AW’s Forever, where gritty breakbeat elements shift back and forth into 4×4 gear and then drop to a long break down blending spacy ambience and the vocals of defiant robots proclaiming dance floor staying power—Forever will be at home with techno, electro, and breakbeat jocks alike.

Deeper and more emotive, Circus of Lost Souls once again takes breakbeat and techno influences and blends them with a somber vocal and squelching synths to take listeners to the darker corners of the dance floor.

Creation

Red Army (aka James Fuhring) has been playing and creating drum & bass since the late nineties. After a chance meeting with Alec Empire and The Panacea in 1997, the former member of screamo punk groups dove into drum & bass, producing tracks for seminal labels like Argon, Phuturo, Skunkrock, Breakbeat Science.

With the Azul EP, Red Army delivers on his promise—these tracks are blue. Moody and melancholy, yet simultaneously forceful, these four tracks embody that spirit of emotive power born to Fuhring in those screamo bands all those years ago.

On Broken Promises, a haunting vocal sample rides a sweeping bassline and steppy drums, brooding and building, teasing in and out heavier elements that foreshadow the tidal wave of bass to come.

Creation, the EPs most light-hearted track, is a punchy liquid roller and takes a similar steppy drum pattern and lush ambient elements to create the one bright spot on this otherwise morose EP.

With Hashrock, The Army delivers off-kilter, tribal-style drums and heavy dubby elements to create a dark and sweeping soundscape. Echoing ape calls cry out in the darkness, letting the listener know this place where the Hashrock resides is much larger and dynamic than they first thought.

Moody yet playful, Stick Figure Carousel twists and turns from light to dark and back again, blending liquid elements and a brooding low-end to forge a manic roller that’s big on bass.

Dubstep is often criticized for a lack of originality, or that the artists and tracks are mere carbon copies. Though the genre has made enormous waves in the electronic community, there are still those out there unconvinced of its relevancy. So the question is: Can a dubstep artist transcend the genre? Can they make an important album? (…continued here!)

http://www.addictech.com/store/index.php?featureID=158

There is something happening on the West Coast with fresh new labels and artists constantly popping up at the edge, and we aim to expose this talent.

Launched in mid-2009, Simplify Recordings is a Seattle based multi-genre imprint, dedicated to the best in all things bass. This up and coming label’s next release is from Danny Beall, a San Jose Dubstep and Glitch producer better known as NiT GriT.

Gaining recognition in the booming West Coast bass music scene, NiT GriT’s debut release on Simplify features three dirty bass bangers. Beall’s offerings “DMT”, “What Am I”, and “Synthetic Heaven” tell a story of dark and twisted melodies complete with edgey atmospherics, bitcrushed synths, and gnarly bass.

Nasty, atmospheric, bouncy and dark are a mixed bag of adjectives used to describe the music of Roksonix, two 25 year olds from Milton Keynes, UK, fresh on the dubstep scene. “Empire”- their debut single is an epic monster of a tune with smooth, melodic vibes set to make some serious waves!

With his extensive background in trance production, NumberNin6’s approach to dub is one with a different angle than most of his fellow producers. Meticulously lacing screaming distorted basslines with haunting melodies and lush, layered soundscapes, he manages to blend together a very deep array of sounds with his newest tune, and Simplify debut: “The Tempest”.

Support from Bassnectar, Flux Pavillion, Vaski, Nick Argon, iLL.Gates, Reid Speed, Aaron Simpson, Doctor P, Trolley Snatcha, Cookie Monsta & many more!
